In the state I live in if a person attend cosmetology school and only learns the hair cutting part their license states right on it barbering. It does not matter if they are male or female. Barber is just a term for someone who cuts hair. It is neither masculine or feminine. In the old days barbers did much more than cut hair too. They even preformed surgeries and dentistry. The red and white barber pole was a symbol for blood and bandages.Why is a barber masculine but a person who cuts hair in a salon is not?
Not the same job - barbers train in barber schools, but those who cut hair and work in salons 99% of the time train in cosmetology schools which is very much more involved: perms, hair tints and coloring, bleaching, layer cuts, more design work with long and short hair. If one goes to a barber shop, they generally want their hair cut - that's it. They want no special services, just trims and cuts. And I don't agree that men who work in hair salons are mostly gay.....I've known many and I'd say more than 50% are not gay, they just enjoy doing more to hair than just cut and trim. They have more often than not been pretty damn good at it as well.

And it's not exactly the same job, either. I don't think barbers color mens hair, do they? And they don't cut womens hair for sure.

I had to cut back on my salon trips as well. So I started relaxing my hair myself with Parnevu Relaxer (with Tea Tree). It works very well. But it depends on how straight you like your hair to be. I have very thick, long hair, so I like it to be as straight as possible, and Parnevu does exactly that. Also I let my hair air dry after I wash it, then the next day I blow dry it out to straighten it. Then I bevel it or use a ceramic curling iron if I want curls. You can go to a hair shop and ask them what to buy thats not so much money and easy. also ask some friends who does their hair and what i mean is that alot of people i know get thier hair done by someone that you can go to thier house or they go to yours and is done really cheap from what i heard. a friend of mines niece does hair and she charges really cheap and shes good at it. people do it as a side job.

I would try finding a really good barber shop. You can't really just pick one because you need to find a stylist that knows what he/she is doing and that have experience with guys cuts. Don't be jaded because one crummy hairdresser left a bad taste in your mouth! Give another one a chance. Let her know exactly what you want and don't be afraid to let her know you're nervous, due to past bad experiences. It'll keep her cautious that she's doing just what you asked for!


I'd recommend some long surface layers in your hair, with some perimeter layers (layers around your face). I bet it would be beautiful!

If you dont like it after that then DONT do it again, because i liked it the 1st time but then when i went to do it again there they went Sloppy. Now i go to a Hair salon Called Amy's.

i go to a regis salon at my local mall and i love them. theyre all super nice there! ive been seeing my hairstylist there for over a year now and she's great. people there are experienced so i would give them a shot. just tell them EXACTLY what you want and dont want. i asked my stylist if it annoys them when people do that and she said it makes the job easier. that way THEY know exactly what to do and dont have to guess what youre looking for since you wont speak up.





so just let them know and you should be fine :)

Your hair just may be very delicate or damaged. Use a good shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. And only shampoo your hair when it is dirty. Often times people will shampoo their hair once or even twice a day. Unless your hair is dirty you are stripping the healthy oils from your hair drying it out further damaging it.


Only use a blow dryer, straightening or curling iron if you have a product in your hair to protect it from the heat.


If you are chemically treating your hair; tinting, bleaching, straightening or perming, this will damage your hair and cause split ends as well. And your hair will require better conditioning treatments.





Because I don't have you in my chair it is really hard to pin point the cause or give you advice on product. Talk to your hair dresser and ask them how often you should be getting your hair trimmed and what products they would recommend.

I REALLY like my stylist. She's a doll, and she has cut my hair this style before. Even when we've decided on refinements to this style, I've always been happy with her work. One time she didn't really layer it enough, and I simply went back and she layered it some more. This is more difficult-- it's too short, and the subtle changes which she has made really change the character of the cut.





I like her. We've even talked about going out for coffee together. She knows I'm not quite happy with the cut, but is there a next step? If so, what might it be?

this has happened with me too. my hair stylist cut my hair too short. but i didn't say anything coz she always does a good job with my hair. i let my hair grow for a 2 months and then went to her. i told her that the last time she cut it too short. and she was really understanding and fixed it for me.


so wait around for a few month let ur hair grow. and tell ur hairstylist that u don't want it too short just the way it used to be. i m sure she will understand.
It's just hair, and hair grows. If you ask for compensation, you might offend her. But, make sure that you explain about the cut you want the next time you visit the salon. Perhaps then you can also tell her you were having a hard time with the previous cut. Do not expect any compensation even then, but still she'll know what happened and that you will speak up if it happens again.

this is what I did, and I got the exact haircut i wanted! okay, print up your favorite picture of Alice where her hair looks best. then, you need to go to a really nice hair salon, one that's not a cheepy one like where i just got my crappish hair cut, great clips. They should be able to make a pretty close replica of it on your head. sry that sounds a little funny.
They cut it shorter on the outside than on the inside. Bring a photo of exactly what you want and a qualified hair stylist should be able to duplicate it.
You get it cut short. You have to style it, curl it backwards, to get it to look just like hers.
just bring a picture to the stylist. they'll know what to do. to make it flip out, that's just the products she uses. ask your stylist which ones she would recommend.

Its kind of expensive, but Sheer Ego is quite a nice place. Its all the way down Monroe Ave, heading into Pittsford, in the plaza next to the HUGE Wegmans. I get massages there every once in a while and a few of the girls I work with get their hair done there and it always looks pretty hot.

It doesnt really make a difference. But most hair salons will cut it after they dry it because when your hair is exposed to heat it will usually cause your ends to split. If you asked them to cut your ends first im sure they would, but in my personal opinion i think you would be better off getting them cut after incase any split ends start from the dryer.

Nope. When I had my arm in a cast, I would go in for a wash and style every couple days. As long as your hair is not stringy with grease, it is fine.

Depends on your hair style and how picky you are. Me for instance, I have to go to a salon where I know there is someone that can think outside of the box. I get my hair layered and have them texturize the ends of the layers and midshaft around my head....that takes practice as you can end up cutting some pretty decent size chunks out of your hair if they dont know what they are doing. But for my daughter I would go to a beauty school especially if I just want her hair trimmed at the ends and it is all one length.
beauty schools are cheaper but they CAN mess up your hair because they are students and sometimes you are having your hair cut by someone who has never cut a real person's hair before, so obviously they are not going to do as great a job as a professional. I still think that the break in price is worth it for women.

Yes they can. Like the first girl said, go to a salon with experience, becasue they wont grow if you cut them too short.
Go to a salon that installs or sells extensions because they have a feel of how to handle the hair.
Since hair extensions are usually made out of human hair, getting them cut and styled is almost exactly the same as getting your own hair cut and styled. The only exeption is curling and straightening. The heat from these styling tools can melt the glue that attach your hair extensions to your hair. Unless your extensions are woven in though, curling and straightening shouldn't be a problem. Hope i could help! :)

Give them a few days. You might just be in shock because they are so different. If you still don't like them why don't you pin them back and let your longer hair come over them. Sadly, you can't do much with full bangs, until they grow out. You can pin them back with a bobby pin if you'd like, but that's the most you can do. Next time, ask your hair dresser their opinion of what type of haircut you should get and if you want bangs, ask them to demonstrate the different looks between side and full bangs. I wasn't sure if I wanted full or side bangs, so she demostrated what both would look on me and I chose side bangs. I love them now and I hope my nice little trick will help you out in the future. But for now, all you have to do is wait until they grow out and pin them back with a bobby pin or clip. Good luck!!

no. you need to walk in and be seen by a stylist. the style you want might need to be razor cut and not everyone does this. some charge more for 'specialty' cuts like this. there might be one stylist who loves doing that style and another who hates it, so the receptionist can put you with the correct stylist; you don't want to end up with the stylist who hates doing that style do you?
A Chain Salon will publish a price but your cut will no be better than the $20 they quote you. Salons can't committ over the phone because you may have dmaged hair, thick hair or overprocessed hair that reuqires additional treatments. I would ask for a range in cost to determine whether or not it meets your budget. They have to give you at least that!

Yes cut them. I always have this problem and it annoys the hell out of me cause your nails look awesome then you have like one or two broken ones and it looks crap. Cut them and get acrylics, they look just as good!
i watch my sister work at the nail salon . what you want to do next time is get your nails overlayed so they wont break or you know chip off. but for now. go to the salon. let them cut it so it will be even and get it polished.

No, I used to get my thick hair thinned out - when I had long hair....but techinally thinning your hair out means that NO LENGTH is being taken off, but the girl I went to didn't know how to work with my hair when I asked it to be thinned and she ended up wacking all my hair off - so be careful who you go to.

that's a tough one because a salon would color your hair then cut it because they know exactly what they are doing so they will put the color in the right spots so it will look good with the cut. since you are doing it at home things change, you could get it cut first so then you could know exactly where you will want the color to go and be done or you can color it first and just in case there's damage caused to the ends it will not matter because you are getting your hair cut anyway. it's really up to you, just giving you some ideas to think about

Not much you can do except refuse to go back to the salon. I went to a chinese salon because I've had good experiences in my past. The Chinese places want you in and out so when i went in to get nails removed they didnt let me soak in acetone, they attempted to pry them off with a butter knife. 3 cuts later I said GIVE ME ACETONE and they relented but it takes longer so they thought they were losing business. These days the law is that your manicurist is supposed to have tools for each of their clients. Um, just describe what u want exactly, I mean, it's their job to cut ur hair into whatever style u wish! Make sure that u tell them exactly what u want, cos if it does not come out right, u're gonna have 2 live with it! Get a bang not 2 short, nor too long, or else things may come out quite ugly! Well, good luck! And tell me how it goes when after u have made ur decision!

Yikes! Thats one pricey salon. I thought where I went was expensive. Highlights and a cut = $140.





But no, generally you do not tip the owners. Thats how I've always been told. You tip the workers, but seeing as how the whole amount goes to the owner, they don't require the tip.

There's no reason to ever tip the owner, even if he charges the same price as everyone else or is the only stylist. That's up to you though.

I'm a hairdressers also and we don't use anything special for a wash, cut and bow dry.. Just shampoo and conditioner suited for your hair, and some styling products.. We do work under bright lights, much different from what people have in their homes..

You can get a new look with a stylist who is creative, and talented. I wold stay clear of the cheap places. They too often have unskilled people cutting hair, and you'll probably regret going in the first place. It depends on how much money you are willing to spend. A high end salon or spa is not cheap. But that seems to be where the most talented stylists are employed at. Arrange for a free consultation. Check out a few places, and get several opinions. Don't go with the first one you visit to just 'because.' Take your time and find the right stylist for you. It will be worth the effort.
Where ever you go, talk with them, ask for a reasonable type cut, that your hair can do. IF you are curly do not ask for a straight cut, if you have straight hair do not ask for what a curly hair can do.





Keep an eye on them and remind them, during the cut, that you do NOT want it too short.


Even good cutters want to cut it all off!!!
You can check the ratings and reviews of the salons in your area (check online or ask someone you know). I personally like dominican salons but a lot of other stylist are nice also. Ask around or check online. maybe you know someone who got a cut at some point. good luck

By ';cuts black hair'; I presume you mean African hair rather than just anybody with black hair, right? If so you need to say so or your question doesn't make sense - as ANY salon would cut a person's hair regardless of what colour it was.





However, if you mean you want a specialist African/black person's hair, then there's one in Manchester in Moss Lane (East I think) near the Whalley Pub in M16.
i think that the voodoo salon in liverpool city centre might specialise in that but i'm not entirely sure. I only know cos my best friend had the same dilemma and she always goes there.

well of course it will depend on where you live, if you go to a beauty shop or a salon and what you really want done. But I would say that $20 - $30 is probably a good guess. We live in AR and my daughter just had her hair done at a beauty shop for prom and it took 1 1/2 hours and it cost $25.

Just have your normal salon, (granted, not the same hairresser) cut it in a ponytail. You can braid the ponytail or have two of the if you have thick hair. Take large plastic bag along and stick your hair in there. Send your hair to Locks of Love yourself in a padded envelope. That's what I did!
